The striking Romanesque Revival style (a signature bravura at the time) of the building’s façade and the stunning red bricks walls are the biddings of the Griffits Brothers who commissioned it. The rounded arches that put the accent on the big windows and the massive walls give it the subtle characteristic of Gothic architecture.

The multiple stories and complicated roofing system are still kept today as a token of their vision. They were famous merchants in Melbourne that wanted a grandiose space for a new store and big rooms for storage. The building was finished in the 1900’s.


In the 1940’s, it became a headquarter to the Verona Press. By the 1960’s, it was sold to the Herald and the Weekly Times as part of the new headquarters for the newspaper. They were the ones who named it :Gravure House”. It was the home to many subdivisions and affiliates of the paper from United Press to Home Beautiful.

The rooms of the hotel were once filled with correspondents delivering new valuable information to the citizens of Melbourne.


By the middle of the 1970’s, it was a famous spot for billiard lovers and snooker players. Dolly Lindrum and her husband managed the property that gained traction because of her very prominent uncle Walter Lindrum (World Champion in billiards). Billiards and snooker were the family business. They leased the building from the Herald until 1988.


In the middle of 1999, Hotel Lindrum as you know it and see it today, was born. The primary goal was to keep all of the historical significance and to restore the original features of the past. The unique quality of the location and the vibrant and exciting history are the most charming features of the abode.

In memory of the brilliant man and woman that made this place, you can still find the items of Walter Lindrum displayed at the Billiard Room, and our guests receive a courtesy on the house newspaper each morning.
